The brief history of The Polish Society of Nondestructive Testing and Technical
Diagnostic SIMP
Polish Society for Nondestructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics SIMP celebrates the 55th anniversary of its activity in the fields of material testing. The main trend of scientific and technical activities in this domain was developing within the frame of the Polish Society of Mechanical Engineers, the initiator, together the Polish Academy of Sciencies (PAN) as the substantial patron of material testing in Poland.
In 1956 the Section of Experimental Analysis of Stresses started its activities under the guidance of prof. Jerzy Pindera. In 1959 its name was changed to Section of the Strength of Materials. In 1964 prof. Zdzialaw Pawlowski became the chairman of this Section. The name of the Section was changed once more to Section of the Strength and Testing of Materials. For twenty years the Head of the Section was professor Zdzislaw Pawlowski who was later elected as its Honorary Chairman. In the years from 1984 to 1990 the chairmen of the Section were the colleagues Czeslaw Dybiec and Roman Ostrowski. In 1990 dr Jan Mottl took over and in compliance with the resolution of the main board of SIMP the new name became Polish Society for Nondestructive Testing SIMP. In 1995 in result of the extension of its activities and the reqiurements of interational cooperation Society took the name Polish Society for Nondestructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics SIMP (PTBNiDT SIMP). Since that time the duties of the chairman are covered by dr Jan Mottl and Honorary Chairman was to his death in 1999 prof. Zdzislaw Pawlowski.
PTBNiDT SIMP has its branch offices in Katowice, Cracow, Poznan, Szczecin, Torun, Warsaw and Wroclaw. Since 1970 the PTBNiDT SIMP has been represented in the International Committee for Nondestructive Testing. From 1955 to 1970 Poland was represented in the aforesaid Committee by PAN. In 1969 it became a member of the International Congress on Fracture. In 1978 cooperation was taken up with the European Counsil for Nondestructive Testing. In 1998 PTBNiDT SIMP being the cofounder, it became a member of the European Federation of Nondestructive Testing, an organisation wth the legal status, recorded in Brussels.
In the course of many years activities 34 Conferences of Nondestructive Testing have been organised (in each of which 250 to 600 persons participated) as well as more 100 seminars and instructive meetings. E.g. in ultrasonic testing in 1962 to 1996, 256 were run.
Representatives from Poland took active part in all the International Congresses on Nondestructive Testing in 1955 to 1970 representing the PAN and SIMP, organised on all the continenents. We have also been organisers or co-organizers International Conferences (in particular The 7th International Congress for Nondestructive Testing in Warsaw, 1973 and the Polish-Czech-German Conference on NDT organised in Dresden in 1997.
