Ultrasonic Examination of "Difficult" Welds

Abstract:

In this article the through-transmission method of ultrasonic weld examination is described. This method, rarely used, enables the examination of some type of welds that can not be examined by traditional pulse–echo method and, because of this, they are not mostly examined by ultrasonic techniques - "difficult" welds. Many examples of weld examinations with usage of this method are presented. The article contains also methodology and procedure of ultrasonic examination of some type of welds with the through-transmission method. This method can be automated by application of special mechanical system that makes easy the movement of probes and enable the use of scanner for automatic registration of examination results.

Instruction of Ultrasonic Testing of Welds according to EN 1712 and EN 1714 standards

Abstract:

ULTRA Institute was asked several times for help with technical conflicts between our clients and their customer. Conflicts concerned welded constructions. In these conflicts our clients faced additional costs caused by supervision testing made by "third side". Our clients testings results was possitive and "third side" testing results was negative. Differences in results was caused by dimness of standards. Standards allows different interpretation and comparation of testing results without saying about testing conditions is a misunderstanding. This procedure doesn’t change standards requirements. Procedure precisely defines testing conditions so that different interpretation isn’t possible. Procedure shows two testing ways: universal testing SU with usage of any flaw detector and fast testing SS with usage of scaner and for ex. CUD flaw detector.

Abstract:

Dynamic data base in weld examination

Abstract:

In this article the modern and integrated system is presented. It is intentend to support quality managment during performing complex objects like block boilers, pipelines and others. Elaboration of that system came off lack of proper informatic systems supporting non-destructive testing. In the end it efficiently made usage of examination results much lower. Presented UltraBase technology supports concluding about starting repairs and other actions, based on collected data. Basis of that system is UltraBase program. Every received testing results are stored into UltraBase. For each element new record in data base is created. Full uasege of UltraBase capabilities, meaning searching, filtering and reporting provide concluding about repairs, exchanges, proprierty of actions. In assumption presented system is adressed for people whom are interested in increasing of realiability of their products, aprreciating simplicity and intuitional operating, especcialy using ultrasonic examinations but not only.

In this article the method of thin weld examination is presented. It is further called as IBUS-TD procedure version 05. This method relies on experiences gathered during application of earlier version in the examination of circumferential welds of pipes and flat welds. The article presents the general guidelines of method, application range, required hardware and methodology of examination. The validation method of hardware and examination reports is also presented.

Abstract:

In this article we give a method - a procedure of a strict connection the results of ultrasonic examination of welds with gaining a high level of their reliability. The article contains elements of reliability theory, its reference to serial models (welds) and to the ultrasonic examination method called IBUS-TD [1]. Moreover the article contains the conclusions transformed into the IBUS-NZ procedure that describe the system of quality handle. In fact it is a dynamic database which is made of every information concerning an execution of welds by feedback and of results. This database reveals the sources of faults in welds executions. It makes possible references to organisational decisions on the producing level (assessment of welders and control) and on the level of global analysis as well. IBUS-NZ program together with the modified CUD flaw detector form a system which works irrespective of such changeable elements as various welders, time of working, ability of operators (examination persons) - because all of this is selected and can be modified. An important feature of the system is self-improvement ability and quick reaction on appearing abnormalities.

Ultrasonic examinations of composite tanks

Abstract:

Composite materials in many constructions are replacing traditionally used metals. It is happening because of advantages of composite materials especially in aviation industry. High corrosion resistance provides the usage of these materials in chemical industry (ex. tanks for different fluids and gases). Appearing failures cause the necessary of improvement of control methods. It was assumed that introdution of ultrasonic examinations in a range of tank control (made of composite materials) can increase their safely exploitation. The topic of this article is a report from verification of that assumption and giving technological conditions (eventually organizational conditions of entering). Examinations performed for this report were executed in ZBM Ultra which used its technological possibilities and defraied all costs.

Present chosen methods of ultrasonic weld examinations

Abstract:

In this article two methods of ultrafonic examinations that contain wide range of weld thickness (2mm and above) are presented. First one, contains non-normalized range of thickness 2-8 mm, is a present version of known for many years Weld Examination Instruction (IBUS-TD) based on usage of tandem probes and DAC curves. Tandem probes, which are new elaboration, characterize high detectability and high signal/noise ratio. Second method, contains range of thicknes over 8 mm, is a procedure of examinations according to standards: PN-EN1712 and PN-EN1714. This procedure provides automatic registration of results of weld examination with usage of scaner and automatic weld valuation.

Abstract:

The article is the continuation of an earlier article. They both talk over the new method of non destructive examinations joining visual examinations with ultrasonic examinations and also with advanced digital technology which provides additionally new possibilities of illustrating (illustrating C) of automation and registration, now also in range of usefulness of examinations. Method uses camera to location of probe position on examined element. It provides registration and presentation of results of ultrasonic examinations in three-dimensional space as well as illustrating in chosen by operator sections. The showed pictures can serve to location of defects, reading of their dimensions, and also valuation of examined elements according to chosen criterions. Showed next version of flaw detector VUD contains the worked out digital camera fitted for co-operation with typical defectoscope CUD. Results of examinations and current examination possibilities of this set are put in this article .

System of Examination and Monitoring Tanks Tightness according to ULTRA-MONIT Method.

Abstract:

This article contains a description of new method of periodical examinations and continuous monitoring of tightness of underground fuel tanks. The legal requirement for tanks monitoring is actually realized through constructional change into tanks with double coat. It requires big investment cost and provides pauses in exploitation. Presented method thanks to its characteristics allows more effective monitoring of tanks with single and double coat. Monitoring depends on performing following individual tightness examinations. Single tightness examination depends on measurement and registration of change in fluid level in filled part of tank and on measurement of change in gas pressure in remain part of tank (including installation). Based on gathered results automatic tightness valuation is performed. It starts the next examination. Realization of monitoring process is assured by proper equipment with special software. In presented method, valuation of tightness based on very precise measurement eventually leakage. The precision of measurement is veryfied through calibration based on simulation of leakage. The new in presented method is fact that method sensitivity can be matched to requirements and local conditions and also through the Internet, remonte inspection is possible.

In this article a method of ultrasonic examination - video ultrasonic one is presented. In this method a video signal from camera is used to localize the probe position on tested element. It enables to register and present the examination data in 3D form and gives the possibility of making cross-section. The created draws can be used to localize the flaws and determine their size.

In this article the method of thin weld examination is presented. This method called TandCUD is designed to test welds of butt plates and boiler pipes as well. In this method special tandem probes are used. These probes with high signal to noise ratio give a good repeatability. The DAC curves used in this method standardize the evaluation of tested welds and enable to reduce the number of required calibration blocks

Abstract:

In this article a procedure of weld examination according to European Standards EN1712 and EN1714 is presented. This procedure enables automatic data registration of tested weld and automatic weld evaluation according to mentioned standards. Automatic data registration is made with scanner that uses ultrasonic probes working on Rayleigh's wave. The automatic evaluation is made by computer program that enables to print examination reports according to the recommendations of the standards.

In this article the basic problems of leak testing - formal, legal and technical ones in underground fuel tanks are presented. Procedures Of Ultrasonic Testing Based On Digital Techniques

Abstract:

In this article new possibilities of portable flow detectors equipped with built-in scanner, universal and objective procedures are presented. These procedures enable the execution of testing according to any standards and technical conditions. The universal procedures automate e.g. size evaluation of detected defects. Objective procedures are applied to testing of e.g. electrical insulators, axles, welded joints according to European Standard EN1712 - EN1714. Each procedure is executed step by step and is inspired, controlled and registered by programs included in flow detector. The programs can be easily changed and exchanged with the host computer. The scanner enables to draw a map of detected defects automatically and to automate evaluations of tested elements.
