The problem of snapping rail axes is an issue which has been known for many years, and spite of the efforts and activities in this area of many institutions until now is unresolved. The fundamental question is therefore whether the present findings and actions are sufficient. It seems that the simplest solution is to increase the frequency of testing. The costs and logistical difficulties associated with it, are obvious. Another recommended action of an analysis of each event (failure) to determine its cause, and the results published. Until now this instruction has not been executed within the Union. Until now there is at least one credible expert technical causes of the accident (incident) on the Internet. ZBM ULTRA therefore set itself the goal of improving the situation by developing equipment and procedures for ultrasonic rail axes at different levels of disassembling and test automation. Offered measuring system to ensure acceleration of research, its credibility and the ability to record the results, and even entire course of the test. Ultrasonic controls is one of the most effective ways to detect discontinuities in the axis before a failure. UT research are comparative research - comparing the amount of ultrasonic echo obtained from the artificial notches on the pattern of a possible echo obtained in the same spot test axle. The test are most at risk of failure areas diameters and thus changes the axis. Manual tests are so incredibly tedious, and their credibility often leaves much to be desired. Currently ZBM ULTRA offers:

  • Railway axle test without disassembly of the carrier and the central axis by wireless flaw detector with writable capabilities entire course of the test;
  • stand for testing of axles and wheels to varying degrees disassembling using profiled ultrasonic probes repeatedly accelerate the process;
  • semiautomatic stand for testing railway hollow axis;
  • ZBM ULTRA and Lucchini Poland provide training in the field of non-destructive testing and certification followed by an examination conducted by the Transportation Technical Supervision extension of the railway maintenance sector.

Examination of drilled railway axles

Summary:

The examination method of drilled axles elaborated by ULTRA company is presented in the article. The construction of such axles imposes the basic method of examination - the 45 degree probes moved inside drilled hole. In presented solution, the axle is tested simultaneously with two probes fixed o the thrill that is rotated and moved along axle. All the time during examination the location of probes is monitored (linear - along the axle and angular - on axle section). It enables the precise location of indications that are automatically registred. The linear location is measured with extra ultrasonic probes, the angular location with inclinometer. The result of examination is the map of indications and not tested places.
